Backstage with superstar P!nk sure looks different today to when she kicked off her rock career as a rebellious teenager.
The recent birth of her son, Jameson – a younger brother to daughter Willow – means that life on the road is very much a family affair. Her children are now in tow for every extraordinary moment, along with former moto-cross racing husband Carey Hart.
Refreshingly candid, the artist born Alecia Moore this week opens up to 60 MINUTESreporter Allison Langdon on juggling fame and motherhood. And in an exclusive preview of this week’s story it’s clear that no story goes untold.
“It [parenthood] makes romance difficult,” says Langdon “How do you do it?”
“Well, we have a guesthouse,” says P!nk. “You just need a guesthouse!”
For Langdon, who is also a new-mum to 8-month-old son Mack, interviewing P!nk came as a rare, intimate look at the softer side of one of the world’s most famous pop music artists.
Bonding over the not-so-glamorous sides of motherhood, Langdon applauds P!nk’s hilariously honest Instagram shot using a breast pump.
“Carey’s like, ‘What’s happening for you right now? Does that hurt?’” she laughs.
“I’m like, ‘Yeah it kinda hurts. I’m being milked’”
38-year-old P!nk is back in rehearsals with new music after a five year break – proving again why she’s no fleeting star in what can be a fickle industry – and the 60 MINUTES cameras are there to capture every incredible moment.
Following rehearsals, Allison Langdon also goes backstage with P!nk and her family as she appears on her good friend Ellen De Generes’ show.
It was Ellen who presented Pink with the prestigious Vanguard Award at the recent VMA’s, where her acceptance speech immediately made headlines.
She tells Langdon that the now famous speech inspired by a conversation with Willow about self-image, was not something something she’d planned.
“It just snowballed, and then I just couldn’t stop talking. I was like oh, I’m going to keep going, aren’t I? … I didn’t honestly expect even for it to be a blip on anyone’s radar.”
Notoriously rebellious; P!nk turned to petty crime and hard drugs following her parents’ divorce. She was only 15 when she nearly overdosed.
But as Langdon reveals, P!nk had an extraordinary voice and it would prove her way out when she signed her first record deal at just 16.
The combination of her pop lyrics and rock-star attitude proved to be a winning combination. Since her debut in 2000, P!nk has released seven albums, sold over 40 million albums and 65 million singles.
